A poco menos de un años de su partida, la familia de Tom Petty anunció que se está trabajando en el lanzamiento de un box set póstumo que llevará el nombre «An American Treasure». Será una selección de 60 canciones que fueron escogidas por la hija y esposa de Petty (Adria y Dana), con la anuencia y la opinión de los integrantes de su banda The Heartbreakers (Mike Campbell y Benmont Tench).
El material será lanzado el próximo 28 de septiembre a través de Reprise Records y remasterizado por el ingeniero Ryan Ulate. Serán cuatro discos en los que convivirán grabaciones inéditas, actuaciones históricas en vivo, algunas rarezas y un puñado de versiones alternativas de algunas de sus canciones clásicas.
